Carol Panzer has been writing articles for the newspaper regarding some of the wonderful things we are doing to teach children to read at LGS. We realize not everyone gets the paper so we are putting the articles on the district webpage. Here is the most recent article. If you visit reading lesson in a primary classroom, you might see and hear the teacher asking students to listen for rhyming words or to say a word that rhymes with another word. Or you might see and hear the teacher say something like this: Say “cat”. Now say “cat” but change the first sound to the /b/ sound. That is what is meant by “manipulating” sounds and this is absolutely critical for students’ reading skills. Phonemic awareness is actually more complex than those simple examples, but those are starting points. What can parents of young children do to help build phonemic awareness? Read aloud picture books that use rhymes or look for poetry books or the old stand-by nursery rhymes—yes, like “hickory, dickory dock, the mouse ran up the clock”. Sing songs with rhymes or play word games like asking children who have a strong oral language to say a word that rhymes with another word. That can be a challenge for some students. Ask your child if they can say just the first sound of a word or even use the term “word” so that the child begins to understand that concept. Just remember, words that rhyme may not be spelled the same and differences in dialects (the way different regions or individuals pronounce words) may create unusual rhyming patterns—don’t worry, just read, talk, and have FUN with words!!!
