Announcement of cheer teams for 2022-2023! Congratulations all!

Assessment season is upon us. We ask that you review the attached information in regards to the Kansas State Assessments that your students will be taking. Your child’s attendance is vitally important during this time. We are required to administer these assessments during the assigned testing window. These assessments are relatively brief, but are very important to our school. We are able to take a snapshot of what each student knows and can do. From that, we can determine where we can improve as a school to better meet the needs of our students.
Feel free to reach out with questions.

New Curriculum Materials for Reading USD 215
For the last few months, two committees of USD 215 English Language Arts teachers have been meeting to select a new ELA series for the district. One group was grades K-6 and another 5-12 . The overlap was to support the transition from elementary to middle/high school. The groups of teachers representing every grade level K-12 reviewed the Kansas state standards, discussed priorities for a new series, and reviewed recommendations from EdReports (an independent, non-profit that publishes free reviews of instructional materials to help educators make informed decisions when purchasing new materials).
With that background, each group requested sample materials from 3-4 publishers. Each company provided materials and virtual presentations allowing teachers time to ask questions that arose from the preview materials. Needless to say, this was a time-consuming process for the teachers who did the majority of the material review on their personal time.
Lakin Middle and Lakin High School have selected Into Literature published by Houghton Mifflin-Harcourt. Lakin Grade School selected Wit and Wisdom published by the company Great Minds. For both groups, one priority was to raise the rigor for students of USD 215. Based on the current Kansas standards and the need for a literate population, the committees looked for materials that will challenge Lakin students. Careful consideration was given to grade-appropriate content, and it was determined that two different publishers would be best for the district.
Next fall, families with students in Lakin Grade School can expect to see materials labeled with the Great Minds and/or Wit and Wisdom copyrights. Students will be learning a great deal of content knowledge that includes science and social studies topics as well as improving their fluency skills and understanding of how the English language works. This was a high priority for the elementary teachers since the Science of Reading clearly builds towards high-level comprehension skills. Students’ background knowledge is a critical to comprehension and adding more nonfiction reading will support that.
Beginning a new series is exciting and challenging. More information will be shared in the future.
