Former Kansas State legislator and Speaker of the House, Mr. Melvin Neufeld, met with the three 4th grade Social Studies classes Wednesday, and discussed various topics related to Kansas and its history. Neufeld opened each “session” with the pounding of his gavel and recitation of “The Pledge of Allegiance.” He then gave an overview, and timeline, of the discovery and settling of Kansas using the symbols on the Great Seal of the State of Kansas. Mr. Neufeld continued discussing famous explorers and leaders of the state along with the contributions they made throughout our history. The students learned about the significant roles Lakin and the Arkansas River played in our history as well. As part of the legislature, Mr. Neufeld has firsthand knowledge of creating new laws. He referenced many including those that were passed either to benefit Kansas school children or that originated from students such as letters written by Kansas school children that resulted in the naming of the Barred Tiger Salamander as the official Kansas amphibian. Thank you to Mr. Neufeld for the time he spent representing southwest Kansas residents in Topeka, and for taking the time to speak with our classes today.

The sun finally came out just long enough for us to go measure shadows. Seventh graders have been studying ratios and proportions and how we can use them to determine the height of unmeasurable tall objects.

We had some help today from M&Ms to learn about exponential growth and decay.

It’s fun to work together. 8th grade is doing an integrated social studies and writing project. Look for some primo performances to come later on See Saw.

Please see the attached screenshot for an announcement about student safety and the use of lockers at LHS.
