Here’s another informative article about teaching children to read. It’s written by Mrs. Carol Panzer. Scarborough’s Rope—February 1, 2022 Emojis, symbols, and pictures are common parts of 21st-century communication. When texting, sometimes a thumbs-up emoji is all you need to confirm a message. Other times a more complex picture can be used to explain or clarify an idea or concept. The simple view of reading uses a word equation to explain that reading comprehension is the product of word recognition multiplied by language comprehension. That means if either part of the equation is zero, the result will be zero. Dr. Hollis Scarborough, a reading scientist, elaborated on the simple view of reading and created a graphic to explain with more details. This has become known as Scarborough’s Rope. Picture a rope made up of two large strands that are twisted together. Each of the larger strands is made up of multiple smaller strands that are also twisted together. The rope is strong because of the many strands. Each is necessary for the whole. Dr. Scarborough uses a rope to represent the act of reading. She names one large strand Word Recognition and the other Language Comprehension. Previous articles have discussed areas of Word Recognition (phonological awareness, decoding, and sight word recognition). Those articles were also sent to LGS parents through SeeSaw. Check the USD #125 website or the Lakin Bronc’s Facebook page for those articles if you missed them. The Language Comprehension strand is just as important as word recognition. Language Comprehension includes background knowledge, vocabulary, language structure, verbal reasoning, and literary knowledge. It’s fairly easy to understand that just decoding words won’t help if students don’t know what the words mean, but on the other hand, just knowing a spoken word but not being able to break the alphabetic code to identify it in print, isn’t productive either. Clearly both strands are critical. However, Language comprehension is more complicated than just decoding words and knowing their definitions. Research on background knowledge has shown its importance to reading comprehension. One reading-research project used an article describing part of a baseball game. After reading the article sixty-four 6th graders were asked to use miniature baseball figures to act out what they had read. After carefully analyzing the collected data, researchers found that less-skilled readers who understood baseball were as accurate in their representations as higher-skilled readers. In other words, background knowledge definitely impacts reading comprehension. An entire book has been published on the topic: The Knowledge Gap by Wexler. In education, background knowledge is sometimes called schema which refers to a framework that organizes information in the brain. Background knowledge allows students to build more detailed pictures in their minds as they read. How do young students build background knowledge? They listen to stories; they explore, investigate, create, build, and play. Parents, remember that toddler stage when every question was “why”? They are building background knowledge!!! Of course, it’s the same for older students, but they can also read a wide variety of material and ask more detailed questions. Lakin Grade School teachers are in the process of selecting a new English language arts series that will be adopted this year, and one of the topics high on the priority list is actually the content knowledge students will be reading. Are science and social studies topics consistently represented in the materials students will be using? Of course, wonderful literature (fiction) is also important, but more than ever all of the strands of Scarborough’s Rope are being considered. More about Scarborough’s Rope will be included in future articles. But clearly, background knowledge impacts each of the remaining pieces.
