Here is another article from Carol Panzer regarding the Science of Reading, which has become a focus for us at LGS. Reading scientists no longer debate whether phonics is a necessary part of effective reading instruction. Since reading is not hardwired in the brain, instruction must be explicit, systematic, and cumulative. In other words, the curriculum must be followed intentionally across grade levels. Children, who seem to break the code almost before they start school, can even benefit from instruction in phonemic awareness and phonics. Sometimes students who seem to learn to read effortlessly, still struggle with spelling words that actually follow the patterns learned through phonics. The Simple View of Reading (fluent word reading X language comprehension = reading comprehension) means both parts of the equation are equally important. Scarborough’s Rope is a model that adds more detail to the Simple View of Reading. The word-reading strand consists of phonological awareness, decoding, and sight word recognition. The language-comprehension strand consists of vocabulary, background knowledge, language structures, verbal reasoning, and literary knowledge. The point is that even students with good decoding skills need to continue to build language skills for their reading comprehension to increase. Wide reading will build vocabulary and equally important it will give readers background knowledge. Students today often have background knowledge in areas such as video games and pop culture but that doesn’t always pertain to their academic reading. Older students may also find it difficult to understand the language structure of compound or complex sentences because much of their spare time has been spent watching videos or in casual conversations that use few unique words and mostly incomplete sentences. Vocabulary, background knowledge, and language structure clearly impact reading comprehension. Verbal reasoning is another part of the language-comprehension strand. Recognizing the meanings of figurative language such as metaphors, similes, or idioms is critical for higher level reading comprehension. Being able to draw conclusions and make inferences are also part of verbal reasoning. Even very young students can do that given appropriate text. Making predictions of what might happen next in a story is just one example of verbal reasoning, but there are many different types such as cause and effect, assertion and reason, fact and opinion. The last specific area of the language-comprehension strand is literary knowledge. Simplistically that would include knowing the names for specific genres (biography, fantasy, etc.), but goes beyond that. Typically this is part of the English language arts curriculum but can be introduced at home through exposure to a wide variety of literature. Of course, all of the strands weave together; one doesn’t really stand alone. The main idea is that reading comprehension has many components, and each component supports the others.
