In high school football, a touchdown counts for six points, a field goal 3, and an extra point 1.

Even a forfeit counts as a 1-0 win.

Lakin’s 2-0 win at Cimarron Friday night reflected the rare safety that counts for two points, which is exactly what happened.

The Broncs (4-0) scored the safety in the third quarter when senior captain Daryan Edgington forced the issue in the Bluejays’ end zone, accounting for the only points in the game.

Cimarron had a field goal attempt hit the upright later in the third for their own scoring attempt.

In their opening three games, Lakin had scored 36, 38 and 45 points before last Friday’s anomaly.

But a win is a win.

The Broncs out-rushed Cimarron 122 yards to 3, while the Bluejays had 140 passing yards to Lakin’s 41.

Colter Oldham led the Broncs with 61 yards on 18 carries. Madduz Beltran had 30 yards on 18 carries.

Beltran was 5 of 9. Passing for 41 yards, one of those a 32-yarder to Javion Granado.

The teams were a combined 3 of 23 on third-down conversions.

Both teams weree penalized six times for a combined 69 yards.

Lakin will be at home Friday for homecoming as they take on Southwestern Heights.
