The Broncs volleyball team saw its stellar season end a day early after they went 1-2 in the state Class 3A tournament Friday in pool play.
Lakin, seeded No.-1, dropped matches to Frontenac and Hesston while defeating Galena in the opening round. Only the top two teams advanced to Saturday’s semifinals.
In the first match, the Broncs dropped two sets to Frontenac 25-21, 25-13.
Kamry Michaelis and Aryn Michaelis combined for 14 kills, and Taegan Oldham had 10 assists.
They bounced back against Galena, winning 25-16, 25-23.
Kamry Michaelis and Oldham each, and both Michaelis girls had 12 kills each. Oldham had 17 assists.
In the third match, they fell to Hesston 25-18, 25-12.
Aryn Michaelis had nine kills and Kamry Michaelis had seven. Oldham had 13 assists.
Hesston went on to defeat Frontenac in the consolation finals Saturday.
Lakin ended their season 40-3.
Notes: This was Lakin’s first trip to state since 2014, and their eighth overall, with a top finish of runner-up to Silver Lake in 2003.
The Broncs were third in 1997 and fourth in 1995 and 2004.
Lakin won the HPL tournament for the eighth straight season. Their lone loss before state was to Holcomb in the first quad of the season, which means they entered state on a 38-match win streak.
