Softball punches ticket to state

The softball team defied the odds and punched their ticket to the state tournament Wednesday at Southwestern Heights.

After the No.-9 seed Broncs knocked off the top-seeded Heights 3-2, they took down the fourth-seeded Cimarron Bluejays 7-2 in the regional title game.

Lakin (14-12) out-hit the Jays 12-5, scoring early and often to get the win.

Lakin took a 3-1 lead in the top of the second inning, scoring one run on an error, followed by a two-run single by Taybree Lohman-Fuller.

An inning later, Paiton Talmadge singled in the Broncs’ fourth run. Lohman-Fuller drove in another run in the fifth, and Sara Martinez knocked in the final run in the fifth.

Kiah Beymer went the distance, striking out two and walking two. She scattered five hits and gave up two runs (one earned).

Semifinals

Lakin 3, SWH 2

The semifinal matchup against host and top-seed Southwestern Heights was a battle.

The Broncs took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth. Martinez started the inning with a single and Beymer followed with a double. Next batter Lohman-Fuller singled to left, scoring both runners.

After Heights tied the game 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth, the Broncs’ Atlantis Hernandez singled, scoring Talmadge with what proved to be the winning run.

Beymer pitched a complete game, striking out seven and walking none. The two runs were unearned.

Quarterfinal

Lakin 4, Goodland 3

The softball team kept their season alive with a 4-3 win over Goodland on the road Tuesday.

Lakin did all their scoring in the top of the third inning.

Trailing 2-0, the Broncs scored on a Martinez single, scoring Aydrah Rosales.

Then with two outs and two on, Lileah Villa hit a single to center field, plating Martinez and Beymer.

Maelee Katz singled to right to score Villa and give the Broncs a 4-2 lead.

Goodland scored their final run in the bottom of the third. From there, it was four scoreless innings for both teams, with Lakin coming out on top.

Rosales, Beymer and Lohman-Fuller each had two hits.

Beymer went the distance, giving up five hits and three runs (none earned). She struck out six and walked none.
