Girls fall in semifinals

By LHSports

The Lakin girls’ bid for a trip to the state tournament was stopped Wednesday at home when they fell to Ellsworth 48-42.

The girls made a run late in the fourth quarter. Trailing 43-38, Lileah Villa stole the ball and fed it to Jordan McCombs, who hit a layup with 2:10 to play.

After another Bearcat turnover, McCombs was fouled and she buried two free throws to pull the Broncs within one at 43-42 with 1:12 to play.

But that would be the last scoring for the Broncs. Ellsworth closed out the game with 5 of 6 free throw shooting and Lakin missing shots on their final three possessions.

Ellsworth converted 53 percent of their shots to Lakin’s 33 percent. Lakin outscored the Bearcats 22-7 off turnovers, but the Broncs hit just 8 of 21 from under the rim.

Ellsworth won the rebound battle, 28-19.

McCombs led the Broncs with 13 points and Aryn Michaelis had 12.

Villa had five assists. Michaelis had six rebounds and Kate Miller two.

Lakin finished the season 18-5.
