Robles medals third at state wrestling

Alex Robles stood on the medal stand Saturday at the Class 3-1 state tournament following the final match of his high school career.

The senior received a third-place medal at 144 pounds.

Robles faced Chase Meyer of Hoxie in the third-place match at Fort Hays State University, winning a 14-5 major decision.

Robles got a takedown in each of the first two periods. In the final period, he scored eight points on two takedowns and one near fall to complete his high school career.

To start the tournament Friday, Robles faced Logan Gray of Caney Valley, the No.-5 seed. Robles won by technical fall, 15-0.

In the quarterfinal round, Robles faced Brayton Peters of Minneapolis, the No.-4 seed. Robles won by 13-10 decision.

He led 6-1 with two takedowns in the first period. After getting an escape from a takedown in the second, he led 7-4.

In the third, he got two more takedowns. Peters got three escapes and a takedown to get to the final 13-10.

In the semifinals against Logan Courts of West Franklin, the No.-1 seed, Robles lost 3-0. The only score of the match was a takedown in the first period.

In Saturday’s consolation semifinals versus Reid Griffiths of Herington, Robles won a 16-3 major decision.

Robles scored a takedown and near fall in the first two periods and got two takedowns and a near fall in the third to advance to the third-place match.

Robles placed third at the regional tournament in Norton the previous week.
