Wrestlers open season

The wrestling squads opened the winter season with tournaments in Wakeeney.

Saturday, Alex Robles placed second at 144 pounds.

The senior, seeded sixth, got falls in his first two matches (1:31 and :34) and then picked up an 8-5 decision over the second seed in the semifinals before losing 106 to Trenton Frank of Scott City.

Weston Loeppke was fourth at 190. He picked up a fall at 1:37 in the opening match and lost by fall in the next round. He got a fall (2:38) in his backside match before losing by technical fall in his final.

Zael Bermudez went 1-2 at 126 pounds. He lost by fall in his opening match, then got a fall (1:31) in round two before losing by major decision.

Camden Bergkamp went 1-2 at 157 pounds. He lost his first two matches by fall before picking up a win by fall (1:33) in his third match.

Lakin finished ninth of 17 schools with 41 points.

On Friday, the Lakin girls wrestled Wakeeney.

Payton Talmadge finished fourth at 135 pounds. She dominated her first match 19-7. Then she lost by fall in her next two matches (:51 and 1:30).

Talmadge came back and won by fall (4:29) before losing by fall (1:23) in her final.

Jersey Gonzalez competed at 120 pounds. After a first-round bye, she lost her next two rounds by fall (1:57 and :43).
