Softball drops two games on senior night

The softball team ended its regular season with a doubleheader loss at home Wednesday on senior night.

Originally scheduled for the previous week, against Holcomb, Lakin fell 15-4 and 20-8 against Liberal.

In the first game, Lakin led 1-0 after the second inning. In the top of the third, however, Liberal took advantage of three Broncs errors to take a 4-1 lead.

Liberal scored multiple runs in each of the next four innings.

Liberal out-hit the Broncs 14-10, with Sarah Peters and Elitza Fonseca both getting a pair of hits. Sara Martinez collected one double.

Moriah Ortiz went all seven innings, striking out seven and walking three. Only eight of the 15 runs were earned.

In game two, Liberal scored four runs in the first inning and led 10-0 after the top of the fifth.

Lakin then scored eight runs in the bottom of the fifth on eight hits, including a 3-run homer by Ortiz to cut the lead to 10-8.

Liberal then scored five runs on four hits in the top of the sixth and five more times on six hits in the seventh.

Liberal out-hit the Broncs 17-10, while Lakin committed seven errors to Liberal’s four.

Ortiz had two hits, her other one a double. Taybree Lohman-Fuller hit a triple and drove in two runs.

Ortiz pitched most of the game, striking out five and walking none.
