Baseball splits with Heights

The baseball season opened Tuesday at home with a split with Southwestern Heights, winning 17-11 and falling 16-15.

The Broncs used a 9-run sixth inning to pull off the comeback win in the first game.

Lakin gave up multiple runs to the Mustangs in each of the first four innings and trailed 11-4 at that point.

But they held Heights scoreless the next three innings while scoring three in the bottom of the fifth and the nine in the bottom of the sixth to get the win.

Eli Bemis had three of Lakin’s 13 hits, including a double and two triples..

Dru Patterson and Adrik Gomez-Esquibel both scored four runs.

Patterson had three of Lakin’s six stolen bases.

Bode McCormick faced 22 batters in three innings, but only two of those were earned. He struck out three and walked three.

Bemis pitched 1.3 innings, striking out three, as well.

Angel Davila pitched the rest of the game, facing eight batters without allowing any to reach base. He needed just 18 pitches to retire the eight batters.

In game two, Lakin held a 9-3 lead after three innings. But Heights scored six in the fourth, two in the fifth, four in the sixth and one more in the seventh to take a 16-11 game into Lakin’s final at-bat.

The Broncs scored four runs in their final at-bat but left two on base on the final out to fall just short.

The Mustangs out-hit the Broncs 18-13, with Gabe Cox leading Lakin with four of those hits and Patterson three.

Lakin hit five doubles, two by Blair Jones. Bemis had three runs batted in, and Patterson scored five times.

Patterson started the game, going nearly four innings, giving up nine runs (three earned), striking out seven and walking three.
