Softball splits with Ulysses

The varsity softball season kicked off two days late last week, with Lakin getting a split at Ulysses Thursday.

Lakin won the first game 10-6 and lost the second 5-2. Tuesday's opener was postponed due to weather.

In the win, Ulysses led 5-0 after four innings, but Lakin scored two runs in the fifth and four each in the final two innings. 

Elitza Fonseca picked up three hits to lead the offense.

The Broncs tied the game in the top of the sixth with a double from Cadence Brown, a single by Lileah Villa, a single by Bri Homes and a double by Jara Davidson. 

After the Tigers scored in the bottom of the sixth, Villa doubled in a run> Luna Rivera singled in another run, and Fonseca drove in two with a single.

Moriah Ortiz got the win, giving up seven hits and seven runs (with just two runs earned), striking out seven and walking six.

Lakin collected 16 hits, and Taybree Lohman-Fuller stole three bases.

In game two, Lakin led 2-0 after two innings, but the Tigers scored twice in the third and three more in the fourth.

Lakin out-hit the Tigers 7-6, with Rivera and Julia Arreola each getting two hits.

Ortiz pitched the first four innings, giving up five runs (three earned), striking out three and walking three. Brown pitched two innings, giving up one hit and striking out two in relief.

In JV action, Lakin got a 13-7 win over Ulysses to improve to 2-1 for the season.

Lakin scored five runs in each of the first two innings and three more in the third. The Broncs out-hit the Tigers 8-4 with Re-cie Dixon, Lohman-Fuller and Sarah Peters each collecting two.

Villa picked up the win, giving up four hits and striking out two.

Villa and Jaydah Chavez each scored three runs. Lohman-Fuller had five stolen bases.
