Robles, Davis, Vazquez head to state

Three Lakin wrestlers earned a trip to the state tournament at Scott City on Saturday.


Ileana Robles, Ivy Davis and Luna Vazquez all punched their tickets at the Class 4-1A tournament.


Robles was the champion at 190 pounds. The freshman received a first-round bye and made the most of her next three rounds, winning all by fall.


She took down Scott City’s Lidia Alfonso in 1:18. In her semifinal, Robles took out Smith Center’s Kate Herredsberg in 1:21.


In her title match, Robles took 5:18 before pinning Brooke Smith of Oakley.


Davis lost just one match on her way to a third-place medal.


After winning her first two rounds by fall (:09 and :29), the senior lost a 10-7 decision in her semifinal.


In the consolation semifinal, Davis won by fall (2:12) over Tatum Brown of Scott City. 


In her third-place match, Davis won by fall over Morgan Hills of Colby (1:32).


Vazquez qualified for state by placing fourth at 105 pounds.


After a first-round bye, the junior lost her quarterfinal match, but she rebounded by winning her next three matches, each by fall (2:42, 4:31, and 4:15).


In her third-place match, Vazquez lost a 10-4 decision to Haylie McDaniel of Scott City.


Miley Roth (125 pounds) and Sarah Peters (130) each won a match in their brackets.


Oakley won the team title with 117 points. Lakin finished ninth with 64.


The girls will compete at the Class 3-1A tournament in Salina at the Tony’s Pizza Events Center Feb. 22-24.
