Boys rally for win over Holcomb

By LHSports

Saturday’s home game was postponed from Tuesday due to weather. The wait was worth it as the Broncs rallied from numerous deficits to get the 70-65 win over Holcomb.

Trailing most of the first half (including by 10 points early in the second quarter) the Broncs grabbed a 35-34 lead at halftime when Dru Patterson hit a 3-pointer in the waning seconds of the half.

Trailing again in the third quarter (the Longhorns led by six early in the period), Lakin worked its way back.

Colter Oldham hit a pair of free throws to tie the game at 48-all at the end of the period.

Then the Broncs' offense caught fire in the final period.

Trailing by three twice midway into the period, Austin Ritsema drained 3-pointers from the top of the circle to tie the game a 56-all and 59-all.

His third trey of the period gave the Broncs a 64-63 lead. Holcomb regained the lead 65-64.

After a missed shot on Holcomb’s next possession, Lakin got the rebound and a pass to Adrik Gomez-Esquibel in front of his bench. He passed to Patterson, who then drained his second 3-pointer of the game to give the Broncs a 67-65 lead with 46 seconds to play.

Oldham added three free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

Holcomb had the lead six times in the final period and Lakin just twice, the second when it mattered most.

Oldham led the Broncs with 22 points and Ritsema had 16.

Only four Holcomb players scored, led by Drayton Knoll’s 36.

Lakin shot 56.3 percent from the floor, including 7 of 12 from behind the arc.

Holcomb shot 52.1 percent but they were 0 of 10 behind the arc.

The Broncs held a 28-26 edge on rebounds, while Holcomb had 16 turnovers to Lakin’s 15.

Ritsema led the team with 14 rebounds. Gomez-Esquibel and Patterson both had three assists.

Lakin (6-2) competes in the league tournament this week and will host Syracuse next Tuesday.
