The varsity cross country runners traveled to Canon City, Colo., Tuesday, with the race finishing across the Royal Gorge Bridge.


Lakin’s boys medaled twice in the top 10, with Austin Ritsema finishing second in 16:16.90. Winning time was 16:00.10, run by former Ulysses High School runner Cole Krug, now running for Lamar, Colo.


Alex Luce placed 10th, running 16:53.20.


The boys field consisted of 172 runners.


Other Lakin finishers for team points were Zael Bermudez (60th) in 19:52.10, Gabe Cox (61st) in 19:57.50, and Justin Leader (67th) in 20:06.50.


Other Lakin runners were Blake Matthews (87) and Eric Munson (102).


Of the 15 teams, Lakin finished fifth with 153 points. Garden City High School placed first with 43.


Emma Miller paced the girls, finishing 22nd of 126 runners. Her time was 23:33.90.


Ivy Davis finished 50th, Odaliz Garcia 66th, Abby Holmes 88th, Luna Vazquez 103rd, Shillelagh Kenner 105th, and Kayleen Tanner 110th.


The team finished eighth of 10 with 207 points. Canon City High School won with 57.
