Goodland hands football first loss

By LHSports

The football team suffered its first loss of the season at Goodland Friday, as they fell 16-14.

Goodland scored a late touchdown and made the two-point conversion with under a minute to play to get the win.

With a tied score of 8-8 late in the fourth quarter, Lakin took the lead when Maddux Beltran hit Ross Rider with a pass over the defense, a 77-yard play that gave Lakin the 14-8 lead with 3:36 remaining.

The point-after-touchdown pass play fell short, and Goodland got the ball back.

A quarterback keeper from Lakin's 2-yard line gave the Cowboys a 14-14 tie with :49 seconds to play. They ran the ball in for the conversion and, ultimately, the win.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Broncs struck first when Armando Salcido ran the ball in from 17 yards out with 10:41 to play in the first half. The pass from Beltran to Dru Patterson gave Lakin an 8-0 lead.

Goodland came back with a 54-yard scoring strike (similar to the play Lakin would score on later) to tie the game.

A defensive game, Lakin had 188 total yards and Goodland had just 128.

Beltran was 2-for-8 passing for 81 yards.

Colter Oldham was the leading rusher with 53 yards on 18 carries.

Javion Granado led the team with eight tackles, including two sacks and three for losses. Timmy Johnson was in on seven tackles.

Patterson had an interception.

Lakin will be at home Friday for the homecoming game against Cimarron.
