Football improves to 2-0

The Broncs defeated Syracuse 50-14 last Friday at home, improving to 2-0 for the season.

Lakin did most of its damage in the first half, scoring five times to take a 37-0 halftime lead.

The defense held Syracuse to just two scores in the final quarter.

Maddux Beltran had 197 yards in total offense to lead the Broncs attack. The senior quarterback rushed for 144 yards and passed for 53.

The Broncs scored on their first possession midway into the first period. Beltran kept the ball, ran to his right and raced up the field 70 yards into the end zone.

With 1:03 left in the first quarter, Colter Oldham punched in from three yards out and Lakin had a 14-0 lead.

Beltran scored again with 6:31 left in the half on a 15-yard run.

On the next possession, Beltran found Ross Rider in the end zone for a 23-yard scoring strike.

Rider gave the Broncs a 37-0 with 44 seconds remaining in the half when he scored on a 44-yard run.

Oldham ran the score to 44-0 when he scored from seven yards out midway into the third period.

Syracuse finally got on the board in the fourth period on a pair of touchdown runs.

Sandwiched between those was Lakin’s final score of the game. The Bulldogs tried an onside kick after their first score. Javion Granado picked up the ball and ran it back 41 yards. Dru Patterson, in at quarterback, scored from 14 yards.

Lakin had 428 yards of offense, 375 of those on the ground. Syracuse had just 216 total yards.

Beltran was 2 of 4 passing for 53 yards. He also led the team in rushing with 144 yards on only five carries.

Oldham had 11 carries for 67 yards. Armando Salcido had 59 yards and Rider 52.

Granado had one catch for 30 yards and Rider one for 23.

Oldham led the team with 11 tackles and Jeremy Oropeza had nine, including two sacks and three tackles for loss.

Lakin travels to Goodland Friday and returns Sept. 22 for homecoming against Cimarron.
