Football opens with win

The Broncs football team kicked off the season last Friday with a dominating road win, 56-14 at Stanton County.


Lakin led 16-0 after one quarter and 35-0 at halftime. They were up 56-0 at the end of three.


Lakin scored on all five of its possessions in the opening half.


Armando Salcido got the Broncs on the scoreboard first with a 25-yard run on Lakin’s first play from scrimmage. 


Ross Rider scored the second touchdown of the quarter on a 26-yard run.


Colter Oldham scored his lone touchdown in the second quarter, this one from 24 yards.


Maddux Beltran hit Rider for a 34-yard strike, and Rider ended the first half scoring with a 24-yard run.


Salcido made it 41-0 in the third period with a 58-yard run, again on the Broncs’ first play of the half after recovering an onside kick. Dru Patterson scored the Broncs’ seventh touchdown on a 1-yard run.


Tyler Tarpley ended the Lakin scoring with a 27-yard run to put the Broncs up 56-0 after three.


Oldham led the team with 126 rushing yards on just 11 carries. Salcido had 105 yards on three carries and Rider 55 yards on three carries.


Beltran completed both of his passing attempts for 44 yards. Rider caught one of those for the 34-yard score and Oldham caught the other for 10 yards.


Jeremy Oropeza and Rider both were involved in 13 tackles. Adrik Gomez made or assisted with 10 tackles and Oldham nine.


Patterson and Salcido both had an interception.


The Broncs will host Syracuse Friday evening. Game time is 7 p.m.
