Lakin High School Parents and caregivers, After consultation with county health officials and consideration of the high number of students in quarantine as well as those with active Covid-19 cases we have decided Lakin High School will move to remote learning beginning Thursday, November 19th. Tomorrow, Wednesday, will be a preparation day for staff so students will not be required to attend school or live stream into classes.. Students will return to a face to face environment after Thanksgiving break. Breakfast and lunch will be available for students to pick up. Parents, please call and notify the high school office if you will be picking up a breakfast or lunch so we can have an accurate count. This will not have an impact on Extra Curricular activities. They will move forward as scheduled. This effects the high school only. Grade school and middle school students will remain in a face to face learning environment.

On Tuesday, October 20th the USD 215 Board of Education voted to suspend health and temperature checks at the start of the school day. After 40 days of school we have learned those checks are of little value in monitoring the health of our students for a variety of reasons. The temperature checks had not identified a single fever and with the onset of cold weather were consistently reading low. The Board concluded it will be more effective to rely on parents to monitor the health of their students and to instruct staff to observe students for signs of illness in the classroom. We urge parents to keep their students home if they are sick and to contact a health care provider if they are exhibiting symptoms of Covid-19. We take the health of our students and the community seriously and are balancing those needs with the needs for students to remain in school. If you have any question regarding this change please contact your building principal.

Meet the Lakin Middle School Staff Member of the Month Tonya Pollart. She is a 29 year veteran teacher who is currently impacting students in the English Language Arts classroom in the 7-8 hallway. This is Mrs. Pollart’s fifth year impacting students in Lakin, coming from Syracuse before that time. In her career she has taught a wide range of grades ranging from kindergarten to fourth grade, to 6th grade ELA/Social, to being a reading specialist and academic coach. Her favorite part of teaching the students is watching them grow from year to year. Her husband Chris Pollart teaches woodshop for Lakin Middle School and Lakin High School. Her eldest daughter, Delaney, has followed in her footsteps as she is teaching 8th-9th English Language Art’s at Goodland. Her daughter Alyse is a Junior at FHSU majoring in nursing. Lakin Middle School recognizes Mrs. Pollart’s outstanding dedication to her work and her kids. She is receiving this nomination based on recommendation from her colleagues. We truly are lucky to have professionals like her positively impacting our kids in Lakin. She gets a certificate from our high school automotive class for a car detailing as well as a free pizza from Hunts Brothers Pizza and Lakin Lanes sponsored by Dan Patterson and Brenda Anderson. Once again please help us congratulating Mrs. Pollart for being this months Lakin Middle School Teacher of the Month. Mrs Pollart, from all of us at LMS, we say thanks.

HOCO 2020 will be here before we know it!! The Homecoming Parade was such an awesome way to kick off HOCO week last year, let's make it even better this year!! Please see the information below. Please join us for the Lakin Homecoming Parade on September 20! It will begin at 6:00 pm. Due to COVID, the district will make a final decision whether the parade will happen or not on September 14. If we DO get to have the parade, then please consider things like masks and social distancing on floats. So, for example, having two trailers of football players instead of one trailer so social distancing can be achieved if masks aren't going to be worn. Also, there will NOT be a pep rally at the end. The theme is "Rail the Railroaders". We welcome all entries from near and far! Possible categories include: floats, antique vehicles, tractors, combines, semi-trucks, motorcycles and 4-wheelers, horses and horse and buggy combinations, miscellaneous category. Prizes will be awarded to the best in each category. If you are interested in having an entry in this parade, please contact Kim Panzer at kim.panzer@usd215.org or 620-640-4420 (text or phone call).

LGS Families and Lakin community, Please come Monday afternoon or Monday evening to LGS to leave an encouraging message for our children on the sidewalk! Please do this on all of the sidewalks around the building as we have seven doors that we are now using for entrance to the building for students. The seven doors all have numbers on them. We will have chalk available for you to use up by the front doors. We just ask that if you use our chalk that you make sure your hands are sanitized to help us prevent germ spreading. You may also bring your own chalk. Please remember to practice social distancing!

Due to the uncertainty regarding school / activities right now, we have decided to move fall senior night for FB, CC, GG and VB to the September 11 home FB game vs Stratford, TX. This way we can at least recognize those seniors in case we get shut down. Hopefully we will be in school all year and can recognize the other senior athletes for their respective sports during their season. More info regarding specifics will be communicated with athletes, parents and coaches.

With that being the case, we will make next week our last official week of BRONC STRONG workouts. Our previous schedule at the beginning of the summer didn't have that due to uncertainties with the summer schedule. As of now, any extra workouts in the weight room, at the track or on the fields can be done at the discretion of the captains and/or head coaches.

As many of you have heard, yesterday the State Board of Education did not approve Governor Kelly’s Executive Order to delay the opening of schools until September 9. The decision on when school starts now shifts to each local school board. At this point in time we do not anticipate a change in the start day for students published on the current calendar. A group of USD 215 staff and patrons began working to solidify our reopening guidelines. We expect those to be approved by the Board of Education at a special meeting in early August. Once they are approved by the Board we will communicate them to you directly and make sure copies are available electronically.

Dear Lakin Community, Today Governor Laura Kelly held a press briefing to announce Kansas Education Plans for the 2020-2021 school year. Joining her at the briefing was Dr. Lee Norman, Secretary for the Kansas Department of Health and Environment and Dr. Randy Watson, Kansas Commissioner of Education. The briefing informed schools that on Monday, July 20, 2020, Governor Kelly will release an executive order requiring schools to delay opening until after Labor Day. It will also require daily temperature checks and masks to be worn. We will know more on Monday after we review the exact wording of the order and will begin work on our specific reopening plan for USD 215 and will include a new academic calendar. REMINDER:  The funds for these scholarships have been turned over to the Kearny County Community Foundation.  The school will no longer be writing the checks for these 4 scholarships.  The KCCF will be issuing these checks but the checks will now be sent directly to your college of attendance. There is also a deadline - all this information needs to be submitted to the LHS office by no later than August 10, 2020. What a day! The Broncs went 2-2 vs some outstanding competition. It isn’t easy to play our style 4 times in one day. Awfully proud of our guys! #PressMentality

Big thanks to Coach Jay at HCC for giving our guys a tour of The Sports Arena. The renovations are amazing. Not sure there is a venue / atmosphere like 3A State Basketball in that gym. #getBETTER 2019 - Sub State Runner Up 2020 - Sub State Runner Up 2021 - ???
