Middle School: Announcements

7/8 Social Studies Syllabus

By Paul Grilliot

Students, Welcome Back!  Hope you had a great summer and here’s to having a great school year.  To have a great year, I have set forth high expectations for you as students.  I expect for all students to be respectful, responsible, and mature.  These three guidelines coincide with our classroom rules so that we will have an enjoyable and educational year.

Course Outline: 50% Tests, 30% Projects, and 20% Homework/Quizzes

Homework: Homework will be assigned on a regular basis.  Unless noted, assignments are due the day after they are assigned at the beginning of the class period.  If homework is turned in at the end of class it is still considered late.  For me to grade homework, it needs to be in the homework box with a name on it.  No name on the paper results in an automatic 20% off.   If you are absent from class and it is excused you will have the number of days you were gone plus one extra day to make up the assignment.  If homework is not turned in after the extra day, the assignment is considered late.  If you are gone on the day an assignment is due it is due on the day you get back to school.

Late Homework: Late homework will be accepted, however points will be deducted.  Late homework is considered late if not turned in at the beginning of the class period.  Homework will be scored a 0% F until the homework is turned in.  Point deduction for 1 day late – 20% off, 2 days late – 30% off, 3 days late – 40% off, and 4-5 days late – 50% off.  After 1 week late assignment will not be scored for points.  Receiving partial points is always better than 0 points.  3 zeroes in a nine weeks will result in a detention being served after school. The moment I grade the assignments and put into the grade book I will count the zeroes.  Even if you turn in the assignment a day late, you had three zeroes in the grade book so you will serve detention.

Leaving Classroom:  Once the bell rings I expect all students to be at their desk working.  If you are entering the doorway once the bell rings you are Tardy.  If you need to use the restroom but feel you will be late to class, bring your books to your desk before the bell rings and then ask me to use the restroom.  The first three minutes of class are dedicated to BCA.  If you need to use the restroom, get a drink, or go to your locker, ask to do this when you walk in the door and I will usually allow you to go.  After the three minutes we will begin the lecture portion of the class.  During this time no one will be allowed to leave the classroom until the bell rings at the end of class.  Only reason to leave the classroom during this time will be emergencies, with a pass from another teacher, or called out by the office.

Cheating: Absolutely unacceptable.  If caught cheating an automatic 0.  Cheating on a test will result in a trip to the office for further discipline.  All offenses of cheating will result in the student calling home with my supervision to explain their actions and a detention.

Behavior and Discipline:  In my classroom I expect all students to be respectful, responsible, and mature.  If problems arise where you are causing distractions or problems you will receive a verbal warning.  If problems continue you will be sent out into the hallway.  If you are sent to the hallway for disruptions/problems you will be required to serve an automatic 30-minute detention at the end of the day.  Inappropriate language will not be used in my classroom or in the school.  Using inappropriate language will result in a verbal warning, and if inappropriate language continues a 30-minute detention will be served.

All other rules may be found in the student handbook under discipline plan.  If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to discuss them with me.  Thank you and good luck.
