USD #215 is seeking nominations for Teacher of the Year. A nomination should consist of a one page statement as to why the teacher should be selected as Teacher of the Year. Nominations should be submitted to the District Office by February 15, 2019 by 4pm.
Lakin USD #215 will hold a community forum for the Gemini II Redesign project on Thursday, January 24, in the middle school library following the middle school basketball games. Come learn about the awesome things happening to make school better for our kids.

Former Kansas State legislator and Speaker of the House, Mr. Melvin Neufeld, met with the three 4th grade Social Studies classes Wednesday, and discussed various topics related to Kansas and its history. Neufeld opened each “session” with the pounding of his gavel and recitation of “The Pledge of Allegiance.” He then gave an overview, and timeline, of the discovery and settling of Kansas using the symbols on the Great Seal of the State of Kansas. Mr. Neufeld continued discussing famous explorers and leaders of the state along with the contributions they made throughout our history. The students learned about the significant roles Lakin and the Arkansas River played in our history as well. As part of the legislature, Mr. Neufeld has firsthand knowledge of creating new laws. He referenced many including those that were passed either to benefit Kansas school children or that originated from students such as letters written by Kansas school children that resulted in the naming of the Barred Tiger Salamander as the official Kansas amphibian. The LMS and LHS were temporarily evacuated shortly after 3:00 due to a strong natural gas odor. Midwest Energy came and inspected all buildings. No leaks were found and students returned to class. The evacuation was taken as a precaution as student safety is one of our top priorities.

LAKIN USD #215 CELEBRATES OUR SCHOOL BOARD LEADERS THIS JANUARY “Lakin USD #215 Board Members Lead the Future” January is School Board Recognition Month, and Lakin USD #215 would like to thank to these community leaders who volunteer countless hours to lead the future of our public schools. “Our board of education is comprised of seven individuals whose decisions impact the future of every child in our school and our greater school community,” said Larry Lyder, Superintendent. “They participate in training, read reports and research and attend specialized professional development to stay on top of education issues and trends, all in preparation for the many decisions they are called upon to make. And they do this all on a volunteer basis!” School board members in Lakin USD #215 develop policies and make tough decisions that help shape the future of our education system. “They are advocates for our community, our children and our public schools, and are committed to providing an excellent education for every child in our community. We are grateful to have this opportunity to formally say ‘thank you’ to each of them,” said Lyder. The men and women serving Lakin USD #215 are Dan Patterson, President, Kenny Waechter, Vice President, Kyle Carlisle, Jennifer Groth, Troy Michel, Nelson Rider, and Sara Veesart. Lakin USD #215 encourages the entire community to thank a school board member, not only this month but throughout the entire year.
