A.L.I.C.E. Training Scheduled for USD #215 Schools Ask any student what to do in case of a fire or tornado, and I’m sure they can tell you without much thought. Ask them what to do if an armed intruder were in the building, and most would struggle to come up with a valid plan. Preparedness is key. Fatalities in school fires are rare, even though there are an average of 4000 fires in U.S. schools each year. The last time a school fire in America caused 10 or more deaths was 1958. Why? The answer is students and staff know what to do. Kansas schools are required to do a fire drill every month. Schools are also required to do 3 tornado drills per year to prepare for mother nature’s wrath. School safety and security is a top priority of USD #215. Administrators and teachers lose sleep at night thinking about all the bad things that "could" happen, as we are sure many parents do. We would all like to think it "will never happen in Lakin", but in this day and age, and the world we live in, how can anyone be sure? Since the Florida tragedy, individual building site councils, students, parents, and staff members have shared concerns and feelings of insecurity. There are times they feel vulnerable. Many do not know what they would do or how to react if something were to happen. In an effort to address those insecure thoughts, Lakin Middle School and Lakin High School will participate in A.L.I.C.E. training directed at student and staff reaction if the unthinkable were to happen. (A.L.I.C.E. is an acronym for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate) A.L.I.C.E. was created to help civilians in all walks of life respond to real-life threats. Instead of locking down in a room and becoming sitting targets resulting in high casualty rates, A.L.I.C.E. aims to provide people with option-based, proactive, survival strategies to prepare for active shooter events. If the police cannot be there in time to help, the next best thing is to prepare civilians to help themselves until public safety does arrive. Lakin Middle School and Lakin High School will be having all-school, A.L.I.C.E. training next week. The day will start with an informational session, in which all students and staff will receive the same message, followed by role play and demonstrations. We are truly blessed to have local, trained A.L.I.C.E. instructors willing to work with us to conduct the sessions. Officers Randy Combs, Garnet Hartman, E.M.T. Jarrod Webb and Principal Cody Calkins are certified to conduct the trainings. Nerf guns and a starter’s pistol will be used as part of the simulations to make them more “real”. If you would like more information about A.L.I.C.E. please visit their website https://www.alicetraining.com/about-us/team/ Lakin schools are concerned about student and staff safety. We will continue to look for more strategies for all to use. USD #215 administration and building site councils believe A.L.I.C.E. training is a good start in that endeavor. We would like to be prepared if something were to happen. Just as in the case of fires and tornadoes, we look at this as a drill for our staff and students to be equipped to handle such situations. If you would like to observe or participate in the drills, if you would like your student(s) to opt-out of participation, or if you have any questions or concerns about the security drills, please do not hesitate to contact Mr. Michaelis at the high school: (620)355-6411 or firstname.lastname@example.org, or Mr. Calkins at the middle school: (620)355-6973 or email@example.com Thank you, Mr. Michaelis & Mr. Calkins
