Boys, girls end seasons at sub-state

Boys fall in substate semis
What had been an outstanding season for the boys basketball team came to an abrupt end last Thursday in substate.
Goodland won the semifinal game at Colby when they put back a missed layup at the buzzer to claim a 63-61 win over the second-seed Broncs.
Lakin had a 19-10 lead after the first quarter, but the Cowboys responded with a 26-9 second period to take an 8-point lead at halftime.
But the Broncs came back strong in the the third period, 21-8, to go up 49-44 after heading into the final quarter.
Lakin was still up midway into the quarter when Goodland mounted a comeback.
They cut into the Lakin lead down the stretch, tying the game a 61-61 late.
On Lakin's final possession, the Broncs put up a shot from the top of the key but it was blocked towards Goodland's goal.
The Cowboys had two players sprint back on offense against one Bronc. The layup missed, but the put back went in right before the buzzer and Goodland got the win.
Diego Davila led Lakin with 29 points, including six 3-pointers.
Hunter Kirby added 16 points, witih four 3-pointers.

The taller Cowboys out-rebounded Lakin 44-27. Leading the Broncs was Davila with seven. He also had four assists.

Lakin finished the season 17-5.
Girls fall in sub-state Cimmaron

Last Tuesday the lady Broncs traveled to Cimmaron playing for the first round of substate, losing 45-41.
They finished the first quarter with a tie of 6-6, but Lakin outscored the Bluejays 15-12 to lead by three, 21-18.
Cimarron came out of halftime to take a one-point lead after three and won the final quarter 12-9 to get the win.
Freshman Jaya Esquibel led the team with 12 points, followed by freshman Talyn Beltran and senior Alyse Pollart with 7 each.
Esquibel and junior Jennifer Crum both went two for two in free-throws.
Pollart led the team with nine rebounds, followed by freshman Tiana Gonzalez with eight. Senior Lizzy Webb had five.
Beltran led with three assists and Pollart had two.
This was the Lady Broncs last game of the season, finishing with a record of 4-17.
