Behind four top-11 finishes, the Lakin girls cross country team finished second at the Syracuse cross country meet last Saturday.

The girls scored 41 team points, just three points behind Hugoton, the state title winners in Class 3A last year.

Leading the way was sophomore Sara White, who won the combined girls race with a time of 21:54.

Junior Jennifer Crum finished second in 22:13.

Tiana Gonzalez was ninth (23:43) and Heather White 11th (23:49). Claria Mendez finished 26th in 25:18 for the 3.2-mile course.

The boys finished sixth of 10 teams with 143 points. Defending state title winners Hugoton won the meet with 33 points, well ahead of Hooker, Okla., with 94.

Edwin Garcia paced the varsity boys with a 14th-place finish in 19:28, while John Wright was 15th in 19:35.

Dominick Daniels was 25th (20:12) , Shane Calvin 40th (20:58) and Ty Davidson was 56th (22:01).

Ethan Horton finished 57th and Corey Carlisle 62nd.

In the JV boys’ division, Jordan Brink led the wasy with a 12th-place finish (22:13) and Jack Achen was 17th (23:02).

Santiago Bernal-Naylor, an exchange student from Spain, finished 28th (24:30).

Troy Ploeger was 34th and Mason Bell 41st..

The Broncs host a meet at the golf course Saturday.

The Hi-Plains League meet will be next Thursday at Elkhart, with the 3A regional meet also at Elkhart Oct. 21.
