Football wins opening thriller
Neither lightning, rain nor triple overtime could prevent the Broncs from winning their season-opener at Hugoton last Friday.
Thr Broncs weathered a 145-minute storm delay to pick up a 28-20 win over the Eagles after Dawsen Shalberg ran the ball in for a score in the third overtime.
Hunter Kirby hit Khai Hernandez for the two-point conversion while the defense shut down Hugoton on its final attempt.
Juan Banuelos gave the Broncs a 6-0 lead when he caught a 37-yard score from Kirby.
Hernandez caught another strike from Kirby for a 14-0 lead.
Coy Adams returned an interception 52 yards for a touchdown to give Lakin a 20-6 lead at halftime.
Hugoton scored twice to tie the game at 20-20 before the thunderstorms came an with 6:27 left in the fourth quarter.
At that point, Hugoton was at Lakin's 17-yard line, but the defense stopped them from scoring following the delay.
Two Broncs turnovers gave Hugoton chances to win in regulation, but the defense stopped them both times.
Kirby finished 8-of-12 passing for 79 yards, two scores and one interception.
Six ball carriers gained 68 total yards, led by Johnney Perez with 40 of those on 14 carries.
Hernandez led all receivers with three catches for 37 yards.
Shalberg was in on 15 tackles and had one fumble recovery.
Hadley Panzer had one sack and got in on 12 tackles.
Hernandez joined Adams with an interception.
